South Florida is hard on cars. The same sunshine and humidity that make Miami great are tough on paint, glass, plastic and rubber.
Strong UV
- UV light breaks down the clear coat over time, leading to dull, chalky or peeling paint, especially on the roof and hood.
- It fades plastic trim, rubber seals and dashboards.
Heat
- High temperatures bake contaminants into the paint.
- Dark panels can get very hot, which speeds up the drying of water spots and bird droppings.
Salt air
Near the coast, salt in the air settles on the car. It speeds up corrosion on exposed metal and can dull trim and wheels.
Rain and hard water
- Sudden downpours leave water that dries into mineral spots.
- Sprinkler overspray can leave stubborn calcium deposits on paint and glass.
Bugs, birds and sap
Love bugs, bird droppings and tree sap are acidic. In hot weather they can etch into clear coat in a matter of days, leaving marks even after washing.
How to protect your car
- Park in shade or a garage when you can, and use a windshield shade.
- Wash regularly, and quickly remove bugs and droppings.
- Dry the car after washing, or use filtered water, to avoid spots.
- Add a layer of protection: a ceramic coating for gloss and easier cleaning, paint protection film for chips and scratches, and window tint for UV and heat in the cabin.
- Treat trim and rubber with a UV protectant.
A little routine care goes a long way, and the right protection saves money on paint repair later.
