Owners often ask whether they should get paint protection film or a ceramic coating. They solve different problems, so the best answer depends on what you want to protect against.
What PPF does best
- Takes the hit from rock chips, road debris and minor scratches.
- A physical barrier a few millimeters thick, so it absorbs impact.
- Many films heal light swirls with heat.
What ceramic coating does best
- Adds a hard, slick layer that boosts gloss.
- Repels water, dirt and many chemicals, and makes washing easier.
- Protects against etching from bugs, droppings and UV to a degree.
- It is very thin, so it does not stop rock chips.
How to choose
- Highway driver, new or high-value car: PPF on the front end is a strong choice.
- Want easy cleaning and a deep shine: a ceramic coating.
- Want the most complete protection: film on the high-impact areas, and a coating on the whole car, including over the film.
The combination
PPF takes care of impacts. A coating on top of the film and the rest of the paint keeps everything slick, glossy and easy to wash, and protects film from staining. Many owners do this on new cars, and it is a common pairing.
Questions to ask
- Which panels would you protect on my car, and why?
- What will the finish look like on my color?
- How do I wash and care for it?
- What is covered if something goes wrong?
Whichever you choose, the quality of the preparation and installation is what makes the difference.
