If you want a new color or finish, you have two main options: wrap the car in vinyl, or repaint it. Each has strengths.
What a wrap is
A wrap is a layer of vinyl film applied over your existing paint. It comes in gloss, satin, matte, metallic and color-shift finishes, and in textures like carbon fiber.
Advantages of a wrap
- Reversible: the film can be removed, usually leaving the original paint underneath.
- Huge range of looks: including finishes that are hard or expensive to paint.
- Paint protection: the wrap shields the paint beneath from minor scratches and sun.
- Faster than a full repaint, in many cases.
Advantages of paint
- A permanent finish that can last the life of the car when done well.
- The traditional route for repairing damage and restoring deep gloss.
- It can be a better fit for a car you will keep for decades.
Limits to keep in mind
- A wrap does not hide bad paint. Peeling clear coat, rust or dents show through and can cause the film to lift.
- A wrap does not last forever. Several years is typical, depending on the film, the climate and care.
- Cheap paint jobs often fail through poor prep, and quality paint is costly. In both cases, the skill of the shop matters more than the label.
Care
- Wash wraps by hand with gentle soap, and avoid brush washes and pressure washers close to edges.
- Matte and satin films need matte-safe products, and no wax or polish.
- Garage or shade parking helps the film last in Miami's sun.
How to decide
If you want to change color without a permanent commitment, or protect the paint you have, a wrap is a strong option. If you want a permanent finish or have damaged paint that needs repair, repainting may be right. A shop can look at your paint in person and tell you which makes sense.
